North Creek (The Gore Mountain Region) is widely known as a winter paradise. The scenery alone is worth the trip. The area's shopping and dining choices are varied and plentiful. Gore Mountain is considered one of the top alpine ski centers in the entire Northeast and also provides trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. In addition, three additional area businesses offer groomed cross-country ski trails: Cunningham’s Ski Barn, the Friend’s Lake Inn Nordic Center, and the Garnet Hill Ski Center. However, when the snow melts and the air turns warm, the number of activities increases dramatically. The Hudson River Gorge offers a spectacular Class III and IV whitewater rafting adventure that will thrill even the most jaded adrenaline lover. Gore Mountain and Garnet Hill offer top-notch mountain biking. The region also offers activities for the more sedentary among us. You can tour a garnet mine (and explore part of the Adirondacks' forgotten history) at Barton Mines. The Adirondack Museum, in nearby Blue Mountain Lake, offers a more complete picture of that history, from mining and logging to railroads and recreation. The Upper Hudson River Railroad takes you on an unforgettable tour of the magnificent mountains; check out the North Creek Railroad Museum (a beautifully-restored train depot) while you wait. When autumn arrives, you can get an unparalleled view of the magnificent foliage from the Gore Mountain Gondola.
